Marriage Devotion: Marriage Needs a Solid Foundation

Share:
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, an iconic structure known for its tilt due to an unstable foundation, set against a scenic sunset sky. The image contrasts the importance of a solid foundation in architecture and life.
The Tower of Pisa leans because it was built on a bad foundation. Like the tower, your marriage needs a strong foundation.

Today’s Scripture

“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Mark 10:6-9, ESV

Today’s Devotion

If it didn’t lean, it would just be another tower in Europe. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is famous because it was built on a poor foundation. To be fair, work on the Tower started in 1173. Even then, medieval builders knew the ground around the tower was soft and marshy. By the time they completed its third story, the tower was leaning southeast.

In 1990, the city of Pisa closed its tower and hired experts to fix its foundation and prevent it from falling over. It reopened in 2001, but the experts say they’ve only slowed its eventual collapse because it lacks a solid foundation.

Foundations aren’t just for buildings. Culture needs them too. If we want to grow strong, healthy families, we must start with a solid foundation. In Mark 10:6-9, Jesus explained that marriage – between one man and one woman – is the foundation of the family.

People may reject God’s design or claim to have found a better way, but in the end, they’re just remaking the Tower of Pisa. So, let’s point them to God’s design for marriage and encourage them to build on His firm foundation.

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, your plans are perfect. Thank you for crafting us and our marriage with such care and attention. Give us courage to share your design for marriage with those around us. Amen.
